Luxembourg’s secretary of state for economy, Francine Closener, launched the new official classification of hotels in Luxembourg yesterday at the Horseca General Assembly.

Developed by the Hotelstars Union which is present in sixteen countries, the classification is based on a uniform system based on guidelines and criteria common to participating countries. The system is voluntary, and the ministry of economy will bear the costs for participating hotels during their first year, 2017/2018.

Hoteliers can carry out a self-assessment online. As of 31 March 2017, the ministry will proceed, together with Horesca, to register the first hotel classifications.

Minister Closener said she hoped that hotels would see the benefits, to themselves and to guests.

"I hope that many institutions will participate in the official classification of their establishment in order to create a transparent offer of tourist accommodation structures in Luxembourg. The classification is for the customer a guarantee of high quality ensuring that a 4 star establishment also offers a service of 4 stars. The new system will contribute not only to the satisfaction of our visitors, but also to the attractiveness of the Grand Duchy as a tourist destination."

It is also planned to introduce a similar classification system for campsites, with criteria adapted to such infrastructures. Currently, the ministry of economy is working closely with the Camprilux professional association to carry out this project, which should be launched in the autumn of 2017.
