Following a new European Directive geared toward the deliberate release of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), giving each country the option of prohibiting the cultivation of GMOs on its territory without having to negotiate with the GMO manufacturers, Luxembourg’s Ministers of Health and the Environment were clear in affirming that Luxembourg’s stance on the matter remained unchanged – GMO cultivation will remain forbidden in the Grand-Duchy.

Lydia Mutsch and Carole Diesschbourg, Ministers of Health and Environment, respectively, met with Martina Holbach and Franziska Achterberg,  representatives from the “Meng Landwirtschaft” platform to clarify the government’s position in relation to this. They stressed that the new Directive would not affect, in any way, their views on the matter.

“Meng Landwirtschaft”, which represents twenty-two organisations, welcomed the government’s stance, however raised the question of the European Commission’s general approach on GMOs.

Other topics disucessed during the meeting included the announcement of the European Commission on a possible revision of GMO marketing authorisation procedure, and the likely short-term authorisation of genetically modified maize (1507).
