Minister for Agriculture, Viticulture and Consumer Protection, Fernand Etgen, today received agricultural organisations at a meeting, ahead of the European meeting of agriculture ministers planned for 7 September.

At today's meeting, Minister Etgen stressed the importance of solidarity between EU Member States and producers in the development of long-term solutions to current crisis-ridden European agricultural markets. He pledged that under the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union, solutions would be established as quickly as possible and that appropriate measures would be taken to guarantee the support of struggling farmers at the national level.

The Minister continued by calling on the population of Luxembourg to depend on locally-produced dairy products in order to support domestic agriculture at home.

The meeting was borne from protesting dairy farmers in the Grand Duchy, who were feeling the effects of falling European milk prices.
