The first session of the Assises de l'Agriculture was held on Tuesday 24 May 2016, chaired by the Prime Minister, Minister of State of Luxembourg, Xavier Bettel.

The session was attended by various government officials, among them Minister of Agriculture, Viticulture and Consumer Protection, Fernand Etgen; Minister of the Environment, Carole Dieschbourg; and Secretary of State for Sustainable Development and Infrastructure, Camille Gira.

The Assises de l'agriculture, announced in the speech on the state of the nation, brought together representatives of the agricultural world and a government delegation around a table to discuss the problems and challenges in the sector in Luxembourg in a bid to reconcile modern agriculture with environmental protection.

The aim of the first meeting was to draw up a situational analysis of the current situation of agriculture in the Grand Duchy and particularly the preservation of agricultural land and obligations faced by farmers to protect the environment.

"We are an agricultural country and we need agriculture," commented Xavier Bettel. "It must, however, respect obligations in terms of environmental protection and durability but also enable farms to survive. Together, we can achieve and sustain this crucial sector for Luxembourg."

A second meeting is scheduled for 21 June 2016.
