The Luxembourg Ministry for Sustainable Development and Infrastructure has announced how Building Information Modelling (BIM) is to be applied in Luxembourg.

Over the last two years in Luxembourg, there has been a significant increase in digitalisation in the building sector. This growth has also been confirmed recently by the Rifkin study which showed that the third industrial revolution is taking place through digitalisation. As such, the building sector is an important pillar in this process.

In light of this positive growth, more than 200 building professionals met on 16 November 2016 at the Chamber of Craft for the conference ‘BIM and its application in Luxembourg’, organised by the CRTI-B GIE in collaboration with Neobuild, the OAI and LIST.

The CRTI-B B (Centre de ressources des technologies et de l'innovation pour le bâtiment), as the main platform which brings together figures in the construction sector has the task of the standardisation, innovation and improvement of the global quality of construction in Luxembourg.

In his introduction, the Minister for Sustainable Development and Infrastructure, François Bausch, emphasised that BIM is a tool which will revolutionise construction in the short-term. BIM enables more, better and cheaper building, while not wasting resources, by following the objectives of sustainable construction and contributing to the circular economy.

oreover, its administration has already adopted this approach to make pilot projects. BIM allows all players in the sector to be more competitive on both the national and international markets. As a result, the government is dedicated to supporting BIM’s current initiatives.

The main objective of the conference was to present the progress of BIM in Luxembourg. For instance, various work groups at the centre of the CTRI-B are currently developing the different documents and protocols necessary for the adequate implementation of BIM in Luxembourg.

Another part of the conference dealt with the experiences of national and international players. The OAI’s (Ordre des architectes et ingénieurs-conseils) vision, the opinions of the Administration for Public Buildings as well as the training programmes offered by the training centre LUSCI were also discussed.

The conference ended with thematic tables at which participants had the chance to ask concrete questions to members of the CRTI-B work groups.

As a result of the interest garnered by this conference, there will be another one held in 2017.
