The Central Bank of Luxembourg has published provisional figures showing that the balance sheet of credit institutions in Luxembourg amounted to over €777 billion at 31 January 2017, an increase of 1.8% over December 2016’s balance of almost €764 billion, and an increase of 1.9% against the figure for January 2016. 

The interbank balance, i.e. the difference between receivables and interbank liabilities, reached a new historic high of 111,596 million euros at the end of January 2017.

Loans to non-bank resident customers increased by €956 million, or 1.2%, between December 2016 and January 2017. Between January 2016 and January 2017, these credits increased by over €4 billion, or 5.6%.

According to the report,  the evolution of credit to non-bank resident customers was driven by loans to non-financial corporations (27.2%), other financial intermediaries (28.9%) and household mortgages (33.5%). 

Between January 2016 and January 2017, loans to non-financial corporations increased by €1.9 billion (10.1%), property loans to households by €1.8 billion (7.4%) and to other financial intermediaries by € 306 million (1.4%).

On the liabilities side, deposits in the non-bank resident sector decreased by €1.24 billion, or 0.6%, between 31 December 2016 and 31 January 2017. Over 12 months, these deposits increased by €11 billion, or 5.3%.

Between January 2016 and January 2017, the most significant increase was in resident deposits from the other financial intermediaries sector (which includes money and non-monetary funds and a 70.4% share as of January 31). Indeed, in the last twelve months, the same deposits increased by €8.8 billion (or 6.0%). As for other sectors, deposits of resident households increased by €1,8 billion, or 5.4%, and deposits of resident non-financial corporations by € 219 million, or 1.5%.

Finally, the report stated, it should be noted that the number of credit institutions listed on the official list as at 31 January 2017 was 142.
