Security Made in Luxembourg has announced that today, 1 February 2017, is International Change Your Password Day.

Changing your password can be seen as a preventative hygiene measure. Even when we are convinced of the quality of a password, it is impossible to know if it is always secure. This risk increases with time, especially since, in recent years, hackers have developed their tools for hacking passwords.

Indeed, some online services are less secure than others and it could be the case that your password has already been distributed along with personal data.

As such, Security Made in Luxembourg is advising the public to change their passwords regularly.

It was Gizmodo’s Matt Buchanan’s idea to launch this International Change Your Password Day to raise awareness and develop good practices regarding password updates and security.

Security Made in Luxembourg reminds the public that a good password should be long (at least 12 characters), should not contain a group of easy-to-guess characters, such as numbers in order, or words from the dictionary, should be unique and not used for several online services, and should be complex with a combination of figures, capital letters and special characters.

In order to increase the security of your personal data, it is also recommended to activate two-factor authentication each time this is possible, and finally, never share your password with anyone.
