The Digital Pole foresees the transfer of posts, units and directorates from DG DIGIT and DG CONNECT from Brussels to Luxembourg.

On Monday, the Vice-President for the Digital Single Market, Andrus Ansip, was in Luxembourg in order to meet with Xavier Bettel, Luxembourg's Prime minister and Minister for Communications and Media, as well as Members of the Parliament; he also visited the European Commission's Directorates-General for Informatics (DIGIT) and for Communications Networks, Content & Technology (DG CONNECT), which have several directorates and units that are headquartered in Luxembourg.

One of the topics was the roll-out of the so-called ‘Digital Pole’. The Digital Pole foresees the transfer of posts, units and directorates from DG DIGIT and DG CONNECT from Brussels to Luxembourg. The objective is to gather new competences around the data economy and to further develop the digital hub in Luxembourg by reinforcing cooperation with the Luxembourgish authorities and capitalising on the initiatives already taken by the Government, including the Digital Lëtzebuerg initiative. The Digital Pole will become a European Commission centre of excellence for providing an important contribution to the definition and practical delivery of the Digital Single Market strategy throughout Europe.

Andrus Ansip said “Luxembourg, a strong digital performer, is an excellent location for the Digital Pole. Luxembourg has been a forerunner among EU countries in making the most of the socio-economic opportunities offered by the digital revolution.”

PM Bettel confirmed that Luxembourg is committed to make the Digital Pole a reality. He also underlined his support for the European Digital Single Market and said that “as a small country, we are outward looking by nature and by necessity. We need a real and ambitious European Digital Single Market to allow all consumers and businesses to benefit from opportunities of the digital economy.”
