The Statistics and Market Intelligence Department of the Luxembourg Institute for Regulation (ILR) has published its annual statistical report on telecommunications in Luxembourg for the year 2016.

On the basis of statistical data collected from service providers, this report provides information on the activities of service providers and on the consumption of customers. At the same time, the service published the study of mobile service tariffs in Luxembourg, which sets out a descriptive description of the tariffs for the services offered to customers in early 2017.

The Telecoms Statistical Report documents the highlights in 2016, including volumes and technical data as well as financial information. In particular, it provides information on the following topics: coverage of fibre-optic housings and premises; high-speed fixed Internet access; national mobile internet traffic; total income and investment; details of revenues from fixed and mobile services.

In particular, the report found that very high-speed internet access (≥30Mbps) had increased to 109, 200 subscribers (+24.8%) in 2016, and that the fixed internet use of the resident population of very high-speed internet changed to 18.9%. Moreover, the fibre-optic coverage of homes was up by 51%, the equivalent of nine points over one year.

The report also revealed that the number of television connections in IPTV over FTTH and VDSL infrastructure is up to 54,600 units (+15.14%), to the detriment of CATV cable infrastructure, as well as that the number of PSTN connections (analogue and ISDN) decreased to 161,740 (-14.9%). Meanwhile, national mobile internet traffic is significantly increasing at 16,844 TByte (+42%), and the use of telephone services (fixed and mobile) has changed very little with 1819.8 million minutes, up 2.1%.

The study of early 2017 rates for mobile services in Luxembourg aims at presenting in a synthetic and transparent way the prices of the cheapest mobile service offers for each of the consumption profiles.
