Orange Luxembourg today joined POST Luxembourg and JOIN Experience in announcing that it will no longer be selling prepaid SIM cards without identification.

From Friday 4 December 2015, prepaid cards will only be available to purchase from Orange stores, as internet sales do not allow for reliable identification according to the telecommunications provider.

This decision, which followed similar measures taken by other companies active in the sector, has been advocated by the government and aims to reinforce security. According to Orange Luxembourg, investigation into prepaid card distribution channels revealed that the only way in which a reliable identification of the user could be obtained was through physical distribution in shops.

Orange stated that it would be contacting all its prepaid customers via their phone number and would invite them to visit an Orange shop in order to provide their identity - an action which the company reported it expected would take several weeks. Customers have been called on to support the approach by identifying themselves in an Orange shop.

"Our social responsibility is our priority and it is our duty to contribute to the security of all in these difficult times," stated Werner De Laet, CEO of Orange Luxembourg SA.
