Following a mid-term review, the Luxembourg Minister for Higher Education and Research, Mark Hansen, has signed endorsements of agreements with the University of Luxembourg, the National Research Fund (FNR) and the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), which will see €1,115.8m invested by the State in research and higher education during the period from 2014 to 2017.

The agreements, concerning a settlement agreement for the University of Luxembourg and multi-year agreements for the LIST public research centre and the FNR, determine the aid allocated by the State to the institutions in return for a series of objectives to be reached.

€590.8m will be awarded to the University of Luxembourg and €324.8m to public research centres. €240.2 million will be spent on the programmes and instruments of the National Research Fund.

The amendments include an additional financial contribution from the State of €12m for 2016 and €18m for the subsequent year.

The Ministry of Higher Education stated that the additional financial resources for the development of new activities, such as the Luxembourg Centre of Logistics, the interdiscplinary 'Institut d’histoire du temps présent' within the University of Luxembourg, and LIST's composite competence centre, are intended to strengthen certain fields such as sciences of education or finances (Fintec) within the University and smart technologies at LIST.

The agreements intend to link spending with the expected results in terms of the scientific, economic and structural, as a means of rendering expenditure more efficient.
