The European Film Academy has announced that the Luxembourg-Ireland co-production, “Mammal”, is among the 50 feature films selected for the European Film Awards 2016; Luxembourg’s production partner was Calach Films.


33 European countries in total are represented, showing the diversity in European cinema. “Mammal” is 96 minutes long and is written and directed by Rebecca Daly of Ireland, with filming in Ireland, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. It is produced by Macdara Kelleher, Conor Barry, Jesus Gonzalez, Gilles Chanial and Reinier Selen.


Synopsis: Margaret, a divorced woman living alone in Dublin, learns that her teenage son has been found dead. Enduring her unsettling grief privately, she escapes daily to the local swimming pool. One day at the pool she runs into Joe, a homeless youth she found injured late one night in the deserted laneway behind her work. Margaret offers Joe a room in her house and an unorthodox relationship starts to develop between them. Margaret’s ex-husband Matt begins to turn up randomly in Margaret’s life. As Margaret and Joe’s mutual reliance grows their tentative trust is threatened by the escalation of Matt’s grieving rage and Joe’s involvement with a gang of violent youths.


In the 20 countries with the most EFA Members, the members have voted one national film into the selection list. To complete the list, a Selection Committee consisting of EFA Board Members and invited experts to include other films in the list: Péter Bognár (Hungary), Dave Calhoun (UK), Paz Lazaro Barquilla (Spain), Christophe Leparc (France) and Alik Shpilyuk (Ukraine).


In the next coming weeks over 3,000 members of the European Film Academy will vote for the nominations in the categories European Film, Director, Actor, Actress and Screenwriter. The nominations will be announced on 5 November at the Seville European Film Festival in Spain. A jury consisting of seven members will select the awards recipients in the categories European Cinematographer, Editor, Production Designer, Costume Designer, Hair & Make-up Artist, Composer and Sound Designer.


The 29th European Film Awards will take place on 10 December 2016 in Wroclaw, the European Capital of Culture 2016. Here, the winners will be presented.
