On Saturday 21 November 2015, the Higher Council of Public Libraries (CSBP) and the National Library of Luxembourg (BNL) launched ebooks.lu, a new online book lending service available in French, German and English.

This free new service is now available in 12 libraries across the Grand Duchy, including the BNL and the Bicherbus mobile library, with more than 78,200 digital books made available to the public. ebooks.lu is a joint initiative between the CSBP and the BNL and began as a pilot project in June 2015 ebfore its management was entrusted to the Luxembourg Consortium and the IT department of the National Library, in cooperation with participating libraries.

Before producing ebooks.lu, the Luxembourg Consortium department was already managing an electronic offering comprised of 53,000 electronic journals, 93,500 scientific ebooks and more than 370 specialised databases, funded by the National Library, the University of Luxembourg and public research centres. The public now hold even more resources at their disposal with the advent of ebooks.lu.

To use ebooks.lu, an individual must be registered with one of the participating libraries, a list of which can be found under 'Bibliothèques partneaires' on the www.ebooks.lu site. From there, users will need to create an Adobe ID, enabling hem to read the borrowed ebook on different portable devices for the duration of the loan. This ID can be created at https://accounts.adobe.com. The next step will be ensuring that the user has a Reader installed to access the content. On a computer, a user can install Reader Adobe Digital Editions for free on www.ebooks.lu under the 'Rechercher un ebook' heading. For tablet or smartphone users, the Bluefire Reader should be downloaded from the Apple Store for iOS or via Google Play for Android. Once installation is complete, users can authenticate themselves with their Adobe username.
