Luxembourg City authorities have announced a series of measures for the short-, medium- and long-term which will aim to improve the quality and accessibility of paths and pedestrian safety in the capital.

The news followed an inventory on the quality of pedestrian routes in the city and the City Council's presentation of the "pedestrian" concept on Monday 25 April 2016. The measures include:

Reduced Waiting Time:

Traffic lights will be adapted to reduce waiting time for pedestrians to a maximum of 50 seconds outside of peak hours and 70 seconds during peak hours. This will be implemented by the end of 2016.

Increased Security around Schools:

Luxembourg will be introducing 30 km/h zones in several areas around the capital, particularly on sections with high traffic next to school or sports institutions, including rue de Gasperich, rue de Merl, rue de Cessange, rue de Trèves, montée de Clausen (in front of the future école centrale de Clausen), rue de Neudorf and rue de Hamm. The objective of these speed limits will be to enhance the security of pedestrians, particularly children on their way to school.

Improved Pathways for All

The measures will also seek to improve the pedestrian experience for those of reduced mobility, meaning that pavements will be widened in several areas such as place de France and place Winston Churchill, to enable a better flow of pedestrians.
