The Bibliothèque nationale de Luxembourg (BnL) has announced the introduction of an automatic borrowing system in its media library.

The BnL has revealed its new automatic borrowing system which is now open to the public. From now on, library users can borrow and return over 15,000 DVDs, Blu-rays, CDs and language tools through a multilingual automatic terminal.

This addition to the library has been made possible through radio frequency identification technology (RFID), which allows the user greater autonomy and, in this case, introduces the idea of library self-service.

The pilot RFID project carried out in the BnL’s media library allows it to test out this new technology to be possibly used in the new library building, which is due to open in the second semester of 2018 in Bricherhaff, Kirchberg.

The media library is open to the public during the BnL’s normal opening hours, Tuesday to Friday between 10:00 and 19:00 and Saturday mornings from 9:00 to 12:00.
