The Association Luxembourgeoise des Groupes Sportifs Oncologiques (ALGSO) met yesterday with Health Minister Lydia Mutsch to discuss the positive effects that sports practice can have on not just lowering the risk of cancer, but actively improving the lives of thoese affected.

The ALGSO has existed since 2009 and now has about 250 members who contribute to the organisation of sports activities for children and adults with cancer. Scientific studies have shown that obesity is a risk factors for cancer, whilst the practice of sports plays a positive role in the lives of cancer patients and may even contribute in some extent to the treatment or healing process.

"What is particularly close to the heart of our association is sport as it relates to health and rehabilitation from cancerous disease," explained Secretary of the ALGSO, Mariette Fischbach.

To this end, Health Minister Lydia Mutsch proposed discussion of a potential collaboration on the 2014-2018 National Cancer Plan, with a specific focus on the 'rehabilitation after cancer' component which was cited as extremely important.

During the meeting, representatives of the ALGSO also presented the various activities and projects of the association, as well as certain obstacles it faced. Among these was the cost of coaching sessions provided by sports and physical therapists who offer individual support and accompaniment, representing the largest expense of the association. These sessions are therefore exclusively covered by donations and membership fees.

Participaton in the oncology sports groups is free for members of the ALGSO.
