At an official ceremony at Neumünster Abbey yesterday, Corinne Cahen, Minister of Family and Integration, awarded diplomas to citizens who have successfully completed the "training of multipliers".

The "training of multipliers" was organised by the Centre for Intercultural and Social Studies and Training (Cefis), with the support of the Luxembourg Office for Reception and Integration (OLAI), within the framework of the national information and awareness campaign for foreigners with a view to their registration in the communal lists of electors.

The aim of the training course is to prepare multipliers, citizens who are volunteers, to raise the awareness of the foreign population with a view to their registration on the electoral rolls for the elections of 8 October. The training is based on reflection, exchange of best practices and perfect knowledge of legislation in this field.

Since October 2016, 23 training courses have been conducted in French, Portuguese and English. More than 220 multipliers representing more than 33 different nationalities have attended the trainings, mostly from Luxembourgers, Portuguese, French and Belgians. In order to give an axis of comparison, only 22 people took part in 2011.

In her speech, the minister thanked the participants for their civic commitment. She then encouraged them to multiply their knowledge and motivate others to register on the electoral roll for the forthcoming communal elections. The minister also insisted on not waiting until 13 July to register, because "it is better to register tomorrow morning."

Before the graduation ceremony, three multipliers testified about their experience and shared their awareness-raising practices. A citizen "multiplier" of Portuguese origin pointed out this: "If we want to do things, we have to start with us. Every voice counts!"
