From 1 - 25 June 2017 an exhibition of photographs by Filipe Ferreira entitled “Seven beauties” will take place in the Cultural Center of Azerbaijan in Luxembourg's “Karabagh”; at the occasion of the Republic Day of Azerbaijan and with the support of the Embassy of Azerbaijan, the verissage was held on Wednesday evening.

The event was attended by the Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaïdjan to Belgium and Luxembourg, Fuad Isgandarov, and his wife, as well as the President of the Association Culturelle d’Azerbaïdjan à Luxembourg “Karabagh”, Léa Linster, and also the Ambassador of Russia to Luxembourg, members of the Azerbaijani community in Luxembourg and a numer of VIPs.

Every year the Cultural Association of Azerbaijan in Luxembourg tries to create a special event to show Azerbaijan from a new perspective; this year the focus is on women.

Many people are prejudiced and think about women in Islamic countries in the role of an uneducated servant of the family with no voice and no rights.

The aim of the exhibition is to show that Azerbaijan, a country which gave voting rights to women 100 years ago (as the first Muslim country and long before some European countries or the US), is a modern and emancipated community, where no one forces or asks the woman to wear a headscarf or to marry someone against their wishes, and where women can get a higher education and occupy leading positions in government, industry and other spheres of life.

The name of the project “Seven beauties” is taken from a famous poem of an Azerbaijani poet and philosopher, Nizami Ganjavi, about seven princesses, each one representing a different clime.

The photography project features seven different Azerbaijani women living in Luxembourg, each one inspiring, beautiful, smart and strong in her own individual way.

The photographer of the project, Filipe Ferreira, was born in Portugal and came to Luxembourg at the age of 16. He’s a third generation photographer: his grandfather Victor Ferreira was a famous photographer in Portugal, and also his mother and the uncle are photographers as well. Filipe is specialised in event and corporate photography with a focus on portraits.

This exhibition is a celebration of contributions Azerbaijani women make in every aspect of life: in the home, in work, in the community, as mothers, as wives, sisters, daughters, as learners, workers and leaders, and shows that Azerbaijan raises educated, creative and successful women.

The event has been organised with the support of the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Belgium and Luxembourg and the State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The exhibition is open to the public on week-days from 14:00 to 18:00 from 1 - 25 June 2017.
