A petition submitted by a member of the Luxembourg public has called for a second publicly-funded international school to be established in the centre of the Grand Duchy.

Petition author Samanta Graziosi stated that a new English-speaking school would enable citizens who do not live in the south of the country or speak Luxembourgish to enroll their children in a state school. The school would give classes predominantly in English and French, with the opportunity for the students to learn Luxembourgish as a means of fully integrating into the country.

The school would offer a 5-year cycle of European primary education, a 7-year cycle of European secondary education and 3 preparatory and reception classes. Each student would choose their Language 1 from among French, German, English and Portuguese, and their Language 2 from among French, German and English. Luxembourgish would be mandatory.

The country's only public international school will open in Differdange in September 2016.

The petition has so far received 597 signatures of support. It needs to reach 4,500 signatures by 5 July 2016 to be considered for debate in parliament. To sign the petition, click here.
