Minister of Health, Lydia Mutsch, yesterday received representatives of the Association luxembourgeoise pour le Spina bifida to discuss the disability issues and the difficulties of people living with the birth defect.

Spina bifida is a birth defect which develops early in pregnancy, often causing paralysis and sensory loss in the lower limbs due to an incomplete closing of the backbone and membranes around the spinal cord. An effective way to prevent spina bifida is for expectant moter to take 400 mg of folic acid daily before and during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. This recommendation is also propagated by the Ministry of Health of the Grand Duchy in the 'Power to the Pregnant Woman' brochure.

The Association luxembourgeoise pour le Spina bifida was originally founded in 1989, as a means of bringing together people with disabilities and their family members with people able to contribute support. During the meeting of the representatives and Health Minister, President of the Association Guy Pauly explained the difficulties faced by people with spina bifida on a daily basis, as well as the multitude of aid required by affected individuals.

The Association therefore holds as an objective the maintenance of the quality of life and autonomy of affected individuals, facilitating the integration and support for affected children in school systems and adults concerned in the workplace.

The Minister praised the members for their commitment and dedication, above all in terms of spreading information and awareness and providing support for affected individuals and families.
