From the beginning of next year, changes affecting insurance for sickness and maternity will come into effect in Luxembourg.

The Luxembourg Minister of Social Security, Romain Schneider, and the president of the Caisse nationale de santé (CNS), Paul Schmit, have presented the changes to affect sickness and maternity insurance from 1 January 2017.

These changes will affect several aspects of health. In terms of dental care, insurance will cover scaling every six months as opposed to once a year and local anaesthesia used for fillings will be reimbursed.

As for eyecare, glasses made from organic glass will be covered without prescription for anyone who is insured. Contact lenses can also be renewed every three years instead of every four.

Moreover, those who are insured will be better reimbursed for transport by ambulance or taxi for health reasons. The changes will also affect orthopaedic care, as well as improving the access to quality services at the CNS.

Minster Romain Schneider has commented that “These improvements regarding the cover of different services is part of the government’s continued efforts to facilitate the access of insured persons to quality care.”

The financial situation of sickness and maternity insurance has improved significantly over recent years, especially after the reform in 2010 which was supported by recent positive economic development, increased employment, and thus more insured people.
