The Luxembourg Minister of Health has admitted that Uvesterol D, the vitamin D supplement which caused a baby’s death, has never been authorised in Luxembourg.

Following the death of a baby in France after receiving a dose of the vitamin D supplement, it has been affirmed that the medicine was never authorised for distribution in Luxembourg.

In order for a medicine to be distributed in Luxembourg, it requires an authorisation to be put on the market, which can only be achieved following the response of a laboratory. In the case of Uvesterol D, the Luxembourg Ministry of Health never received such an authorisation from the CRINEX laboratories.

Uvesterol D is a supplement given to children to prevent or treat vitamin D deficiency. It is important to note that the incident in France is not linked to the vitamin itself but rather the medication.

The Ministry of Health remind the public of the importance of vitamin D intake and that there are other risk-free supplements such as soluble drops.

In the case of doubt, always ask a pharmacist or doctor before stopping any form of treatment.
