Today, on 15 February 2017, the Fondation Cancer signed and formalised the transfer of €641,112 worth of telepathology equipment to the Laboratoire national de santé (LNS).

The Fondation Cancer has given telepathology equipment worth €641,112 to the LNS, in the presence of Luxembourg Minister of Health, Lydia Mutsch, in order to support patient support through medical innovation and more precisely by microscopic telediagnosis that promises innovative perspectives in the management of cancer.

Telepathology is part of the increasingly important field of telemedicine, which brings the surgeon in the operating room and the LNS pathologist into immediate electronic contact.

The setting up of a telepathology platform, which links the four Luxembourg hospitals to the pathology of the LNS, saves time and improves efficiency thanks to immediate analysis.

Moreover, the implementation of telepathology will also have an impact on research. Samples collected from patients are cryopreserved and can be used to refine the diagnosis, if necessary. Once the diagnostic procedure has been completed, specimens can be used in research projects with hospital equipment.

An extemporaneous anatomopathological examination of the surgical specimen is useful and necessary in many areas of cancer surgery, such as ENT, thyroid, lung, and prostate cancer.

Most of the equipment required for the implementation of telepathology has been funded by the Fondation Cancer.

Indeed, Dr. Carlo Bock, President of the Fondation Cancer has stated that: “Thanks to the donation of €641,112, telepathology is a reality in 2017. It offers comfort for the patient, the surgeon and the anatomical pathologist.”

Telepathology has been operational at the Emile Mayrisch Hospital Center since January 2017, and other hospitals will follow during the course of 2017/2018.
