The Ville de Luxembourg today announced that following an action from the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Infrastructure, the 30 km/h zone in Pfaffenthal has been extended to incorporate more roads.

From Monday 31 August 2015, Rue Vauban, from the intersection between Rue du Fort Olizy and Rue Vauban until Rue St Mathieu, as well as Rue Saint Mathieu, from Rue Vauban until house number 9, will effect a speed limit of 30 km/h.

These speed changes were initiated following certain developments made to Rue Vauban, including the raising of the pavement and the narrowing of the road in certain areas. The Ville de Luxembourg stated that the establishment of a 30 zone in other streets and districts in both Pfaffenthal and the wider City area have proven an effective means of calming traffic in residential areas and providing a better quality of life for surrounding residents.

A 30 km/h zone halves the stopping distance of vehicles, to 13 metres, as compared to 26 metres in a permitted 50 km/h zone, and reportedly expands the field of vision of the driver, allowing them to better perceive people on footpaths and on the edge of the pavement. The new speed measure therefore aims to provide a safer environment for vulnerable users such as pedestrians, cyclists and children. as well as motorists themselves who will gain a greater awareness of other road users.
