The Automobile Club of Luxembourg (ACL) has announced safety precautions for driving in the autumn and winter months.

Apart from driving more carefully in colder months, drivers should also ensure that their vehicles are prepared for the weather and road condition changes. This is particularly important regarding their tyres and lights. In fact, this year, ACL are participating in a campaign, beginning on 17 October 2016, specifically targeting these two features.

In addition, the ACL is warning drivers to be aware of animals on the road, taking into account ‘danger’ road signs signalling the presence of animals in an area. It also advises slowing down at night and during the early morning, respecting speed limits and always wearing a seatbelt. In the case of an accident concerning animals, it is essential to inform the nearest police station of the incident. Moreover, if the driver is a member of ACL, the association will pay up to €500 for car damages caused by this type of accident.

Although there is no official date for starting to use winter tyres, the ACL has recommended that drivers fit them soon. Four such tyres are normally sufficient for preparing a vehicle for winter conditions. Accepted tyres in the Grand Duchy should have an “M+S” symbol and/or the image of a mountain with a snowflake.
