St George’s International School in Luxembourg celebrated International Jazz day last Saturday by inviting the public to enjoy a South-American themed wine tasting evening combined with live Jazz music and the opportunity to purchase artwork produced by St George’s talented IGCSE and A-level art students.

The event, hosted by Mélange Design & Style, a deluxe concept store, was organised to raise funds for their newly established Scholarship for the Arts. Over 70 guests attended the vibrant community-based event and over 30 prints were sold raising a substantial amount of money towards the Scholarship.

The newly-implemented Arts Scholarship will be awarded to students who show exceptional diligence, dedication and excellence in their chosen artistic field. The scholarship will aid students in the development of their careers in the arts through the provision of professional instruments or by funding enrichment courses for the arts. A St George’s Music teacher has stated "The student themselves must show motivation and dedication in order to receive any funding so it pushes the level of self-responsibility. The arts are always very dependent on self-motivation in order to achieve success!"

The evening’s chosen wine, produced by Villar de Rohde, was extremely well received and helped to stave off the chilly weather whilst listening to the professional Jazz musicians: the Enigma Ensemble performed throughout the evening.

St George’s Principal, Dr Christian Barkei, summed up the evening by stating "Friends and supporters of the School enjoyed an elegant mix of art and jazz together with food and wine to raise funds for the new art scholarship – thanks to the Enigma Ensemble and to Melange! Thank you also to the arts, drama and music colleagues who supported this first event of its kind; and thank you to the Friends of St George’s for providing the logistical support!"

This event was registered with UNESCO as part of their International Jazz Day festivities. Hosting events such as this demonstrate a prime example of the benefits that can be derived from giving the students the opportunity to showcase and sell their artwork to the public, not only does it provide them with additional confidence in their abilities but also gives some of them the opportunity to work towards a scholarship that could enhance their career considerably.
