Following its study on a Fairtrade banana cooperative in Peru, on Monday 26 September, Fairtrade Luxembourg announced the launch of its awareness campaign called “Make Bananas Fair”.

The awareness campaign takes place between 26 September and 9 October 2016, mobilising everyone involved in the Fairtrade banana industry in the Grand Duchy. The aim is to guarantee a future for banana farmers.

The campaign was officially launched in the Banannefabrik in front of various business partners and Luxembourgish officials as well as banana producer Javier Ordinola and de Marcia Herera, who is in charge of accreditation, internal control and production in the Northern Peruvian cooperative APPBOSA. Javier Ordinola stated that “Fairtrade has made a very positive impact. Here in the village, a lot has changed.”

After having seen first-hand the positive effects of fair trade, Fairtrade Luxembourg’s partners who participated in the study in Peru are even more determined to promote biological and fair bananas from Peru in Luxembourg. As a result of this collective movement, the non-profit organisation has committed itself to the ambitious goal of 50% of bananas on the market being fair trade in Luxembourg by 2020.

Consumers and businesses alike are welcome to join the movement, by simply choosing fair trade bananas on a daily basis. In this collective effort, Fair Trade Luxembourg aims to guarantee the future of small-scale farmers and their families.
