On 20 December 2016, the Luxembourg Minister for Sustainable Development and Infrastructure François Bausch opened the first charging station for electric buses and plug-in hybrids at the Bertrange-Strassen station.

The newly inaugurated electric charging station encompasses an “opportunity charging” system which allows users to charge electric bus and plug-in hybrid batteries with up to 450kW power. Charging starts automatically as soon as the bus stops on the pantograph.

In the first phase, the charging station will primarily be used to fuel six Volvo bus plug-in electric hybrids which drive along bus line 26 from Bertrange to Hesperange. A second identical station is planned for Alzingen in 2017.

The structure has been financed by the State and implemented by the Public Roads Administration and ABB.

Minister François Bausch has stated that “the inauguration of this quick charging station for buses and the circulation of the RGTR network’s first plug-in hybrid buses serves as a starting point for ‘electrification’ and decarbonisation of public road transport”.
