On Friday, the youth section of the LCGB trade union (the LCGB-LCGJ), and the ACEL Student Representation met with Luxembourg's Ministers for Sustainable Development and Infrastructures and Higher Education and Research Minister, to lobby for free public transport for students acorss the Grand Duchy.

The current government has provided free transport for pupils of primary and secondary schools since June 2016; third-level students are now requesting similar benefits. They are arguing that it also goes some way to helping reduce traffic in cities and towns.

In October, the LCGB-LCGJ launched public petition #728, calling for free public transport for university students; more than 7,000 signatures have been received for this petition.

With its call the LCGB-LCGJ recognized the need and the Zeitgeist. With the free use of public transport for students, they are both financially relieved as well as the government's efforts to reduce traffic.

François Bausch, Minister for Sustainable Development and Infrastructures, and Marc Hansen, Minister for Higher Education and Research, met with representatives of the LCGB-LCGJ and the ACEL. The Ministers have confirmed that, from August 2017, all young people up to 20 years of age and students up to 30 years of age, will be free to use public transport in Luxembourg.

Full operationsal details are to be communicated by the relevant ministries nearer to the time.
