On Wednesday 1 February 2017, the Ville de Luxembourg (VdL) began the first phase of the electrification of vehicles with the commissioning of five hybrid electric buses.

These new buses run on lines AVL 9, 13 and 14, which share a common terminal common with the Central Station where the first charging station is located.

The five buses run from 05:00 to 24:00 from Monday to Friday and from 05:00 to 19:00 on Saturdays and Sundays. With an autonomy in electric mode of 7 km, the electric hybrid buses are completely recharged within 6 minutes.

The acquisition of hybrid electric buses, replacing the diesel-powered AVL buses on lines 9, 13 and 14 by 2018, fits with the VdL’s mobility policy promoting the use of public transport, and reflects the city's desire to further enhance the quality of life of its citizens and to act responsibly and sustainably for the environment.

These hybrid buses have many advantages, such as reduced noise associated with driving, greater comfort, and indeed, its ecological value since, in electric mode they do not emit CO2, NOX or fine particles, and they use 100% renewable electricity.

The VdL aims to make 100% of the buses in the capital electric hybrids from 2018 onwards.
