The Minister of Health, Lydia Mutsch, Minister of the Environment, Carole Dieschbourg, and Minister of Agriculture, Viticulture and Consumer Protection, Fernand Etgen, notified the European Commission last Friday of the new regulation prohibiting the cultivation of certain genetically modified organisms in the Grand Duchy.

In 2009, Luxembourg had already filed a safeguard clause for the genetically modified organism MON 810, banning it throughout the territory of Luxembourg. A new Directive, EU 2015/412 introduced on 11 March 2015, allowed for Member States to restrict or prohibit the cultivation of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in their own territories.

Based on the provisions of this new European directive, the decision was taken to prohibit the cultivation of GMOs MON810, 1507, BT11 and GA21 in the Grand Duchy. In this way, Luxembourg has joined the half of EU Member States who have notified the Commission of their wish to oppose the cultivation of GMOs in all or part of their territory.
