On Wednesday 28 September 2016, Luxembourg's Prime Minister Xavier Bettel participated in the SME Summit of the Federal Association of medium-sized business (BVMW) in Berlin, Germany.

This year's edition was held under the motto "dare new responsibilities - for Germany and Europe". On this occasion, Prime Minister Bettel addressed around 800 invited guests and spoke on "Challenges associated with digitisation". He went in his address to the changes but the one bringing the increasing globalization and digitalization on the associated potential.

"The development of information and communication technologies has unbelievable potential, but it will also lead to deep cuts in our usual economic and social structures." Emphasised Xavier Bettel who added: "Therefore, we must now take bold decisions and the course for the future also accepting the challenges and ensure that the high standard of living and social harmony is preserved."

The Prime Minister stated Luxembourg has invested in the last 10 to 15 years significant resources to the diversification of its economy and in the development of new industries, including in the areas of biotechnology, materials research and Fintech as well as in logistics, research and space. Furthermore, Luxembourg has invested heavily in its digital infrastructure, modernising its legislation through the "Digital Lëtzebuerg" initiative. The country has a global digital strategy given to the company to facilitate digitisation that will benefit the entire economy, the ministries and administrations fit for the digital future.

Another guest speaker, among others who participated, was European Commissioner Günther Oettinger, Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister of Economy and Energy, Sigmar Gabriel, and Reinhard Grindel, DFB president, and Liz Mohn, Bertelsmann Supervisory Board.
