Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel will participate in the European Council taking place on 22 and 23 June 2017 in Brussels.

The European Council, under the chairmanship of Donald Tusk, will take stock of migration and the implementation of measures to curb migratory flows and discuss the reform of the Common European Asylum System.

In the area of ​​security and defence, Heads of State or Government will review progress towards strengthening cooperation within the EU.

In addition, the European Council will take stock of efforts to deepen the single market and will endorse the country-specific recommendations of the 2017 European Semester. It will also reaffirm its commitment to the rapid and full implementation of the Paris Agreement.

Finally, the Council will meet in the EU-27 context on 22 June to discuss the latest developments in the negotiations following the United Kingdom's notification of Article 50. On this occasion, the leaders of the 27 countries will also discuss the procedural modalities for the transfer of EU agencies currently based in the United Kingdom.

As well as the European Council, Xavier Bettel will attend a meeting between the Benelux prime ministers and the Prime Minister of Slovenia, Miro Cerar, to exchange views on political developments Europe and the future of Europe. Bettel will also attend a meeting of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) ahead of the European Council.

It should be noted that the Prime Minister will be replaced at the session of 23 June by his Dutch counterpart, Mark Rutte. Indeed, the Prime Minister will be in Luxembourg to attend the festivities in connection with the Luxembourg national holiday.
