The Ville de Luxembourg’s City Council and its Photo Library (Photothèque) presented the winners of the draw, organised as part of the Boulevard Royal photographic exhibition from March, with their prizes – books from the official collection “Trésors de la Photothèque” (Treasures of the Photo Library” - last Friday, 22 May at the Hôtel de Ville.

First prize winner, Chantal Thill received the full collection of five books, while five others – Anne Erven, Monique Keiffer, Robert Weyland, Jane-Anne Fuhrmann and André Claude won a book each.

During the exhibition, which was up from 17 to 29 March earlier this year at the Belle Étoile shopping centre, visitors saw a selection of photographs taken between 1867 and 1981 of the Boulevard Royal and its adjacent streets, squares and avenues, by various photographers (Tony Krier, Marcel Schroeder, Antoine Davito, Jean-Marie Anen, Théo Mey, Rob. Thill, Edouard Kutter, Batty Fischer, Léon Stirn and Paul Aschman). They depicted the transformation of one of the city’s central boulevards, showing old buildings, houses, construction sites, the old tram, the procession celebrating the Grand-Duchy’s independence centenary, the Tour de France passing through in 1953, the old petrol station, a parade of historic vehicles, and children awaiting the arrival of King Baudouin, or playing in the school yard of the old Aldringen School, which no longer exists.

It attracted many visitors, with more than 400 of them answering the draw competition’s question correctly – “What was the name of the old villa at No. 12 Blvd. Royal, which was demolished in 1982 to make way for a hotel?”. The answer: Villa des Roses.
