A driver caused serious injuries to a horse after crashing into the animal whilst driving drunk in Eselborn yesterday evening.

A group of pedestrians were reportedly walking home on the hard shoulder along Rue du Village, with a girl leading the group with a horse on a leash. At approximately 22:15, a motorist arrived in the middle of the road, before veering too far to the left and coming into contact with the horse. This caused the horse to jump, throwing the horse's leader to the ground.

The driver concerned initially fled the scene, before returning to the site of the incident a short time later. The horse was said to have suffered serious injuries and was taken to a specialised clinic in Germany, whilst the girl was taken by ambulance to the hospital to be treated for her own injuries.

The Grand Ducal Police have confirmed that the driver involved tested positive for Driving Under the Influence of alcohol, and his license has been confiscated.
