A 38 year-old man died instantly on Sunday afternoon after he was hit by a TGV train travelling from Luxembourg to Paris in Hettange-Grande, just north of Thionville in France.

The man had been sitting on a bench in the station and is understood to have fallen on the line as the train approached at around 17:00. It was not scheduled to stop at the station. The man's body was identified from documents found nearby. He lived nearby.

Passengers on the train which had stopped a short distance from the impact were brought to Metz on a fleet of seven buses to continue their journey. The line was blocked for the emergency services and the undertaker to clear the area. Rail traffic was expected to resume on the line before 20:00.
