A European Migration Network (EMN) conference was held yesterday, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Schengen agreement.

The conference was jointly organised by the European Commission, the University of Luxembourg and the Immigration Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, with the participation of Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn. The Minister spoke at the last panel of the conference, which was held under the theme of '30 Years of the Schengen Agreement. The Future of Schengen: Challenges and Opportunities' and offered stakeholders an opportunity to exchange views on the contributions of Schengen, as well as the future propects of this agreement within the context of current challenges.

In his address, alongside European Commissioner for Migration and Home Affairs, Dimitris Avramopoulos, and Minister of the Interior of Slovenia, Vesna Györkös Znidar, Minister Asselborn emphasised that "the construction of the Schengen area, as well as European integration in general, is not subject to a fixed nature - quite the contrary".

He concluded: "a sustainable approach and border management measures based on the principles of shared responsibility, mutual trust and solidarity are essential".
