The Grand Ducal Police and SECURITY MADE IN.LU, in association with POST and CFL, have issued a public alert concerning the recent wave of ransomware (data kidnapping) that is currently affecting the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

Ransomware is malicious software that hijacks the computer and / or personal data by encrypting. To recover the data, a sum of money is demanded by cybercriminals. But the payment of the ransom does not guarantee the return of data. By paying, the victim might be identified in dubious financial networks.

Basic tips:

• Think before you click: Do not click on any link or attachment, and that, regardless of the size or the file extension.

• Maintain its operating system and software updates: software can do the subject of a security hole and become vulnerable. These vulnerabilities are increasing opportunities to corrupt your system.

• Do not rely solely on its antivirus. Most ransomware are not blocked by antivirus.

To avoid being trapped, it is recommended to make backups and store them on non-connected media.
