Grand Ducal Police got more than they bargained for in the early hours of Saturday morning after attempts to pull over a motorist for speeding resulted in a high speed car chase and the use of pepper spray.

The motorist, who was driving a car with French plates, was signalled by police after driving at 77 km/h in a 50 km/h zone along Rue de Hollerich. The driver however refused to stop the car, instead accelerating and prompting the officers to give chase.

The driver flew at speeds of over 150 km/h through Rue de Hollerich, Tunnel Albert Bousert and Route de Thionville, repeatedly avoiding police intervention by slamming on the brakes when they approached and spinning 180° to escape in the opposite direction. During the chase, he managed to ram two police vehicles and fly through a red light before eventually becoming stuck after turning around into a police car.

That did not appear to be the end of the story, however, as the driver and the second occupant of the car in question were reported to have resisted arrest and attacked the police officers involved, slightly injuring two. The police eventually used pepper spray to force the two perpetrators into handcuffs, resulting in injuries for which the two offenders were treated at hospital.

The driver admitted that he had attempted to flee the scene as he was not in possession of a driver's license.
