A train and a construction vehicle were involved in a collision shortly before midday on Wednesday after the latter was caught between the level crossing at Manternach.

A man reportedly drove a cherry picker with a working platform over the level crossing as the barriers came down, trapping the man and his vehicle in the path of the railway. The man in question went to the call box to alert the authorities of the situation, but it was too late as a train from Mertert began approaching. The train driver was unable to bring the train to a stop and a head-on collision ensued.

The cherry picker was pushed down the slope by the impact and was completely destroyed, whilst the front of the train was also damaged. The driver suffered minor injuries, but fortunately there were no other passengers onboard as it was a freight train transporting steel beams.

The rails and power supply were also affected during the incident, forcing the route to close, and the locomotive was towed from the scene.
