In a first for the competition, Fairtrade Lëtzbuerg will be distributing 13,000 Fairtrade bananas to attendees at this year's ING Night Marathon, taking place on Saturday 28 May 2016 throughout Luxembourg City.

Sponsored by the company Marcel Grosbusch & fils, these bananas satisfy social, economical and environmental criteria, originating from the Peru's Fairtrade-certified cooperative APPBOSA. Small producers benefit from the guarantee of a fair price, work and safety regulations and a Fairtrade premium which can then be invested into community development projects. The Fairtrade certificate also ensures that the protection of natural resources and organic farming have also been taken into account.

"Once returned fromour study trip to Peru, we decided to sponsor Fairtrad bananas for the ING Marathon in order to support the disadvantaged producers in Latin America, enabling them to build a better tomorrow for themselves and obtain more fairness on the global market," explained Lynn Grosbusch of Marcel Grosbusch & fils.

"Big sports events can combine convivial and social aspects," added president of Fairtrade Lëtzebuerg, Jean-Louis Zeien. "It's a step forward on the level of sustainability and a step towards more justice for small producers in the South. An example to inspire other event organisers, in order to increase the impact of Fairtrade in the South!"
