A young Luxembourg motorist received a shock on Monday morning after narrowly missing being hit by a falling tree along the CR118.

The young woman had been travelling between Mersch and Angelsberg shortly before 10:30 when a tree fell onto the road, forcing her to act fast and remain calm to avoid getting into an accident. According to the driver, the tree missed her vehicle by "less than a second" and she experienced "a loud crack, a bang on the back of the car" from where the tree made contact before hitting the road.

"When I stopped to recover [...] afterwards I was thinking about what might have happened had I been travelling only 1 km/h slower at any one point," the driver in question later told The Luxembourg Chronicle. "I'm just relieved that no one was hurt."

The driver said she was "extremely grateful" for the advanced driving course that new motorists in Luxembourg are required to take which helps them deal with emergency situations - a factor she attributed to her quick thinking.

The CR118 has been highlighted as a problem area for road accidents. Two motorists were killed between Mersch and Angelsberg in the last three months after crashing into trees, leading the Regional Highways Service to install further warning and safety signs in the area.
