On Thursday 9 June 2016, the Secretary General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Houlin Zhao, paid a working visit to Luxembourg.

He was received by the Prime Minister, Minister of State and Minister of Communications, Xavier Bettel, for a meeting at the Hôtel de Bourgogne. Discussions focused on the Luxembourg strategy for ultra-broadband and the Digital Lëtzebuerg initiative. The Prime Minister stated that Luxembourg, which ranks 6th in the world in the ICT Development Index of the ITU, will provide a 1 gigabit/second connection throughout the national territory by 2020.

Currently, fibre optics is available in 52% of homes, whilst more than 90% of households have access to a connection of 100 megabits/second. In addition, the Prime Minister highlighted the Digital Lëtzebuerg strategy, which aims to strengthen and consolidate Luxembourg's position in the field of ICT and raise Luxembourg as a real centre for high tech excellence.
