The President of the United States, Barack Obama, and US Secretary of State, John Kerry, have sent messages to HRH the Grand Duke of Luxembourg on the occasion of the latter's official birthday on 23 June 2016.

The US President's letter read:

"Your Royal Highness:

I extend to you and the people of Luxembourg my best regards on the occasion of your official birthday.

This has been a historic year. Luxembourg’s leadership within the European Union, both as President of the Council and as a founding member, has been instrumental in defending the transatlantic institutions that have safeguarded Europe for more than 70 years. I am grateful for Luxembourg’s prominent role and am confident that the longstanding ties between our two nations will continue to flourish.

As the people of Luxembourg gather to celebrate your birthday, the American people join me in sending to you, your family, and every citizen of the Grand Duchy our heartfelt good wishes."

Meanwhile, John Kerry's statement highlighted the two countries' "commitment to the transatlantic partnership, global security and wider prosperity" and commended the Grand Duchy's contribution as a founding member of NATO and the EU and its hosting of several European institutions. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Luxembourg-American Chamber of Commerce, which was created with the support of Grand Duke Henri himself.

"The United States is proud to call Luxembourg a friend and ally," the statement read. "Best wishes for a joyful celebration of your National Day."

A variety of festivities are organised annually on 22 and 23 June 2016, in which both the public and the Grand Ducal family participate.
