Children across Luxembourg will celebrate the importance of their languages during the European Day of Languages on Monday 26 September 2016.

The European Council first launched this initiative which aims to promote language learning and multicultural awareness in Europe in 2001. Like every year, Luxembourg's Minister of National Education, Children and Young People has proposed language-related activities to celebrate the European Day of Languages as well as the linguistic diversity which exists in Luxembourgish schools and shelters.

Adopting the slogan “Ech a meng Sproochen”, this year the European Day of Languages will be an opportunity to inspire children who are in schools or shelters to explore and realise the importance of their language skills.

Every child has their own unique linguistic skills and these age-appropriate activities, for example colouring in a “languages portrait” or writing a biography based on their languages, aim to encourage them to discover this linguistic diversity and demonstrate the languages they already know as well as those they would like to learn.

New projects such as “Residence Reebou- My multilingual village”, developed by the Centre for intercultural documents and animation (IKL), also allow children to explore their language knowledge beyond the classroom, for example through animated stories. It also encourages them to think about the differences and similarities between languages.

The aforementioned project will be presented at Salon LuxDidac (an exhibition on didactic material) at the end of September and its resources will be distributed in schools.
