Luxembourg’s Secretary Of State for the Economy, Francine Closener has given official “Eurewelcome” plaques to around thirty buildings in the Grand Duchy.

On 21 September 2016, Francine Closener presented this plaque on important buildings such as Luxembourg Town Hall, the The Family of Man exhibition at Clervaux chateau and even Mersch train station and, for the first time, a pedestrian path, in Mondercange.

Infrastructure, services and events, which guarantee accessibility for everyone, receive the label “Eurewelcome”. The awarding of this label, which has existed since 2004, takes into account the concept “Design for All”, as well as the expectations of various visitors and hosts. It works in cooperation with Info-Handicap.

Buildings which carry the label guarantee a high quality service and must also adhere to various criteria which includes disabled parking spaces, a certain door size and unrestricted access to the entrance.

Moreover, the Secretary of State for the Economy awarded four official “Bed+Bike” labels to hotels Oa6, Urspelt Castle, Eichelsberg Apartment and B&B Beessléck in the hospitality sector.
These are institutions which have adapted their services and infrastructure to the specific requirements of bicycles. The “Bed+Bike” label requires, among other things, the availability of repair kits for bikes, a nutritious breakfast rich in vitamins for cyclists and the possibility for cyclists to spent only one night there, even at the weekend. As a result, cyclists know that they are welcome at any place which possesses the official label.

Currently, eighty-four establishments in the hospitality industry have the “Bed+Bike” label, which was introduced in Luxembourg by the Lëtzbuerger Vëlos-Initiative (LVI) in 2011.
Closener has stated that these plaques are part of the Grand Duchy’s strategy of promoting active tourism.
