on Tuesday, Luxembourg's Prime Minister, Xavier Bettel, Secretary of State for Culture, Guy Arendt, and Minister for Sustainable Development and Infrastructure, François Bausch, visited the construction site of the new building for the National library of Luxembourg (BNL), in Luxembourg-Kirchberg.

"The National Library is a key to the knowledge society and the conservation of our heritage" said PM Bettel and he stressed the importance to consolidate the activities of the BNL on a single site and that have to be accessible to persons with disabilities.

Construction on the €112m building began in March 2014. During the visit, officials of the site and the BNL presented explanations of the current site and the building design. The BNL is the country's largest library and currently holds more than 1.7 million physical documents. The new building will allow free access to 300,000 documents, and will be equipped with an automatic transport system facilitating the flow of books.

Minister Bausch focused on the energy concept of the new building which is characterised by the application of basic principles implemented consistently on all projects by the state: "We use energy-efficient equipment and adopt renewable energy. In addition, the project is currently well managed accordign to the timeline and budget."

The project budget amounts to €112,171,000 and commissioning of the building is scheduled for late 2018.
