Following the decisions of the Justice and Home Affairs Council of September 2015, and within the framework of the relocation mechanism, Luxembourg will welcome a total of 557 asylum-seekers by the end of 2017 from Greece and Italy.

Luxembourg is determined to ensure that this mechanism works and continues its commitments. Thus, on Thursday 12 January 2017, 29 people, including 15 adults and 14 children, arrived in Luxembourg; they constitute the fifth group of applicants for international protection to be relocated from Greece.

To date, the total number of relocations from Greece is 165, while 61 people have been relocated from Italy.

Representatives of the Directorate of Immigration of Luxembourg's Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, the Luxembourg Office for Hospitality and Integration (OLAI), administration under the Ministry of Family and Integration, welcomed the people at the airport.

OLAI will take care of the reception and the social supervision of the new arrivals and will support them in their approaches of everyday life throughout the procedure of their request for international protection.

Applicants for international protection relocated from Greece and Italy go through the asylum procedure as provided for by the Law of 18 December 2015 on international protection and temporary protection.
