At Friday's inauguration of the Vakanz travel fair at LuxExpo, Francine Closener, Secretary of State at the Ministry of the Economy, announced that the state would be supporting attracting large international events to be held in Luxembourg as well as promoting hiking throughout the Grand Duchy.

She talked about Luxembourg offering 5,000+ km of hiking trails on offer which will be reorganised in relation to the various tourist and cultural attractions, while improving the signage of tourist itineraries. "Like Switzerland or Austria, we want to optimise our offer in active tourism to make Luxembourg a destination of choice for hiking in natural environments of great beauty, to participate with family or friends, or by bike" she stated.

Francine Closener also announced that for 2017, the budgetary envelope of the Ministry of the Economy has been significantly increased to grant financial assistance to private and public organisers of congresses, conferences, symposiums or similar events of a certain size being organised in the Grand Duchy. From now on, associations or federations organising international sporting events or other large-scale events of this type in Luxembourg are also, under certain conditions, eligible for such aid in order to contribute to the development of tourism in Luxembourg, multiplying local economic spin-offs.
