Whilst the number of applications for asylum consistently rose over the past few months, these have fallen slightly in June to 143.

The figures take into account the number of applications for asylum formally submitted to the Directorate of Immigration, and so do not correspond to the total number of arrivals in the Luxembourg Reception and Integration Agency (OLAI) facilities for the same reference period.

Throughout 2017, asylum application numbers have generally continued to rise compared to the previous three years (2013-2016). This was not the case, however, for the months of January and June, which fell to 225 and 143 applications compared to the 2016 figures of 265 and 160 respectively.

Nevertheless, the total number of applications for the first half of the year remain higher than those of previous years with 1,211 applications by June 2017 compared to 894 in 2016 and 544 in 2015.

Most June asylum seekers coming from Europe were Albanian, making up 18 out of a total of 51, followed by Serbia with 15 demanding asylum in the Grand Duchy.

Luxembourg also received applications from Syria, who by far represent the largest number of asylum seekers from Asia with 15 out of a total of 35, as well as Tunisia (13) and Morocco (11) coming from the African continent. Moreover, Luxembourg relocated one Eritrean person from Italy.

Syria was the main country of origin for asylum seekers this year, representing 200 out of 1,211 applicants.
